Profiles is an ongoing series, seeking to create spaces of affinity, where similarly identified folks have a space to talk about the perceptions, nuances and actualities of their identity.
Having known someone for ten years, one would figure there is nothing new that they could learn about that person. However, I was totally wrong. Sitting around the dinner table with my oldest friend's family, I sat and listened as stories of tropical paradise converged with unfortunate experiences of exclusion and ethnic discrimination. What truly surprised me was how much my friend and her sister learned, from their parents, as well. In a house balancing the influences of Indonesian culture and the blended, borrowed, identity that is American, the children that embody these cultures internally expressed a sense of guilt, hope, appreciation and confusion that was authentically theirs
