Karen Casas (15), a De La Salle student, is committed to gain as much knowledge as possible, knowing her future is hers to control.
Born in Portland, Karen spent a majority of her childhood living in Michoacán, Mexico, giving her a rare worldly perception of the elements of a place. As I interviewed her, our conversation touched on subjects beyond gentrification and displacement.
“I was expecting them [Portland Community College] to take my grandma's house and create classrooms so that people can create a better future for themselves, but instead they built a parking lot, so I was very disappointed.”
